Nepal Visa Overview
Most international visitors require a visa to enter Nepal. The good news is that Nepal offers a convenient visa-on-arrival system at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and at multiple land border crossings with India, China, and Tibet.
Visa Types and Fees
Nepal offers tourist visas for the following durations:
- 15-day visa: USD 30 (multiple entry)
- 30-day visa: USD 50 (multiple entry)
- 90-day visa: USD 125 (multiple entry)
Visa fees can be paid in US dollars (cash) at the airport or border. ATMs are available at the airport if you need to withdraw Nepali rupees. Indian citizens do not require a visa but must carry a valid passport or voter ID card.
Required Documents
To obtain your Nepal visa, you will need:
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
- One passport-size photograph (4.5cm x 3.5cm)
- Completed arrival form (available at the airport or fill online at nepaliport.gov.np)
- Visa fee in cash (USD)
Visa on Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, proceed to the visa-on-arrival hall. Fill in the arrival form at the electronic kiosks, submit your application with passport and photo at the immigration counter, pay the visa fee, and receive your visa stamp. The entire process typically takes 15-30 minutes depending on queue length.
Visa Extensions
Visa extensions are available at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu and Pokhara. Extensions are granted for a minimum of 15 days at a fee of USD 30. Extensions beyond 150 days require special permission. We recommend applying for a longer visa initially rather than extending, as the process can take 2-3 working days.
Restricted Area Permits
Certain regions in Nepal, including Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga, and Dolpo, require special restricted area permits. These are arranged by Nepal Lion Tours as part of your trekking package and are not available independently. Additional permit fees apply and vary by region.
Tips for a Smooth Entry
Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, visa, and booking confirmations. Carry passport photos for any permit applications during your stay. Register your trek with the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card, which Nepal Lion Tours arranges as part of all trekking packages.
