Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your Himalayan adventure

The best time to visit Nepal is during autumn (September to November) when the skies are clear, temperatures are comfortable, and Himalayan views are spectacular. Spring (March to May) is also excellent, offering rhododendron blooms and warm conditions at lower elevations. The monsoon season (June to August) brings rain to most of Nepal but is ideal for visiting rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang and Manang.

Yes, most international visitors need a tourist visa to enter Nepal. Visas are available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and at land border checkpoints. You will need a passport valid for at least 6 months, a passport-size photo, and the visa fee — USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, or USD 125 for 90 days. Citizens of India, China, and SAARC countries have separate visa arrangements.

Himalayan weather varies dramatically by altitude and season. In autumn, daytime temperatures at lower elevations range from 15°C to 25°C, dropping below freezing at high camps. Spring brings similar conditions with occasional afternoon clouds. Winter (December to February) is cold at altitude but offers clear skies. Summer monsoon brings heavy rain below 4,000m but rain-shadow areas remain dry. Layered clothing is essential year-round.

Fitness requirements depend on the trek difficulty. Easy treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill require basic fitness — if you can walk 5-6 hours daily on uneven terrain, you will manage well. Moderate treks like Langtang Valley or Annapurna Base Camp demand good cardiovascular fitness and the ability to walk 6-7 hours at altitude. Challenging treks like Everest Base Camp or Manaslu Circuit require excellent stamina and ideally prior high-altitude experience. We recommend starting a fitness routine 2-3 months before your trek.

Essential items include layered clothing (moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof outer shell), sturdy broken-in trekking boots, a sleeping bag rated to -10°C for high-altitude treks, a 25-30L daypack, sun protection (hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses), water purification tablets or a filter, trekking poles, and a basic first-aid kit. Most gear can be rented or purchased affordably in Kathmandu and Pokhara. We provide a detailed packing list upon booking confirmation.

Altitude sickness (AMS) occurs when you ascend too quickly without allowing your body to acclimatize. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Prevention strategies include ascending gradually (no more than 300-500m per day above 3,000m), staying well-hydrated, avoiding alcohol, and taking scheduled acclimatization days. Our itineraries are designed with proper acclimatization built in, and our guides are trained to recognize and manage altitude-related issues. In severe cases, immediate descent is the treatment.

Booking is straightforward. Browse our travel packages on the website and click "Book Now" on your preferred package. Select your departure date, the number of travelers, and complete the booking form with your details. You can also contact us directly via email or phone for a customized itinerary. A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking, with the remaining balance due 30 days before the trip start date. We accept bank transfer and major credit cards.

Cancellations made 60 or more days before the trip start date receive a full refund minus a small administrative fee. Cancellations made 30-59 days before receive a 50% refund. Cancellations made less than 30 days before departure are non-refundable. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers trip cancellation. In the rare event that we cancel a trip due to safety concerns or insufficient group size, you will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule to an alternative date.

Yes, trekking in Nepal is very safe when done with experienced and licensed operators. Our guides are government-licensed, trained in wilderness first aid, and experienced in high-altitude trekking. We carry satellite phones, emergency oxygen, and first-aid supplies on every trek. All itineraries include proper acclimatization days to minimize altitude sickness risk. The main safety considerations are altitude sickness, weather changes, and trail conditions — all of which our experienced team manages carefully.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is essential for any trip to Nepal. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking up to your trek's maximum altitude, emergency helicopter evacuation (which can cost USD 5,000+), trip cancellation, and medical expenses. Standard travel insurance policies often exclude activities above 3,000m, so verify your policy specifically covers high-altitude trekking. We can recommend suitable insurance providers upon request and are happy to verify your policy coverage before departure.

What Our Travelers Say

Real stories from adventurers who've experienced the Himalayas with us

R

Rajesh Sharma

India Annapurna Circuit Trek

"I have trekked in the Himalayas multiple times but the Annapurna Circuit was on another level. The diversity of landscapes is incredible — from lush green rice paddies to barren high-altitude desert. Crossing the Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters was challenging but the sense of achievement was overwhelming. The team at Nepal Lion Tours was professional and the porter service made the journey much more enjoyable. The natural hot springs at Tatopani after days of trekking was pure heaven. A must-do for any serious trekker."

Sarah Mitchell

United States Everest Base Camp Trek

"The Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Lion Tours was the highlight of my life. From the moment I landed in Lukla, every detail was taken care of. Our guide Pemba was incredibly knowledgeable about Sherpa culture and kept us motivated during the tough ascent to Kala Patthar. Watching the sunrise over Everest from the top was a moment I will never forget. The teahouses were comfortable and the food was surprisingly good at such high altitudes. I highly recommend this trek to anyone who wants to experience the magic of the Himalayas."

M

Marco Rossi

Italy Everest Helicopter Tour

"If you do not have the time or fitness for a multi-day trek, the Everest Helicopter Tour is an incredible alternative. We flew from Kathmandu early morning and landed at Kala Patthar for a close-up view of Everest that most trekkers spend weeks to reach. The breakfast at Everest View Hotel with the Himalayan panorama stretching before you was unforgettable. The pilot was experienced and made the flight smooth and comfortable. Nepal Lion Tours organized everything from permits to hotel pickup. A once-in-a-lifetime experience."

P

Priya Patel

India Mardi Himal Trek

"Mardi Himal is Nepal's best-kept secret. While everyone flocks to the popular trails, this hidden gem offers solitude and some of the most dramatic mountain views I have ever seen. The ridge walk with Annapurna South and Machapuchare towering above you is surreal. We barely saw other trekkers for the entire trek. The sunrise from Mardi Himal base camp was pure magic — golden light painting the snow-capped peaks while clouds filled the valley below. Nepal Lion Tours recommended this trek when I told them I wanted something off the beaten path, and it was the best advice anyone has ever given me."
